First Day with Students

The Duquesne students all arrived Monday afternoon. We had dinner under the big thatched pavilion by the ocean on nice balmy night. It stopped raining and after dinner the stars were amazing.
We had an orientation from the students from 10 until noon, then after lunch we went on a tour of Bagamoyo.

Photos of the Bagamoyo tour.

Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo was once the main port city on East Africa. It was settled by Arabs. Unfortunately the slave trade flourished here and even more on Zanzibar. Later the shallow beach slope caused the Arabs to move the main port to Dar es Salaam, about 30 miles south. During the German and British occupation of Bagamoyo, each had a small outpost here. Today, it is a quiet town of about 35,000 people.

Tomorrow, I start teaching! We will jump into Astronomy and Earth Science for four hours. We are planning on having class at MARUCO from 10 AM until noon, a two hour break, then again from 2 to 4 PM.

Enjoy the pictures!
